This defensive prowess helped propel the Avalanche to the franchise's second Stanley Cup championship, with a lineup that included the likes of Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, and Milan Hejduk.

The Avalanche finished the regular season with a 52-16 record, good for first place in the Northwest Division. In the playoffs, they defeated the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, and St. Louis Blues before facing the New Jersey Devils in the Stanley Cup Final. Colorado won the series in seven games, capturing the franchise's first Stanley Cup since 1996.
